Importance of Knowing Your Surgical Choices

Understanding the different surgical options for weight loss is paramount for several reasons. When considering surgery, it is important to understand what the surgery involves. What suits you best might differ from the surgery offered to other patients. At Hunter Weight Loss, we offer all the approved weight loss surgeries and suggest an option best suited to your particular circumstance.

Here are some key reasons why understanding these options is crucial:

  • Informed Decision-Making: Patients must make well-informed decisions about their healthcare, especially elective surgeries like weight loss procedures. By understanding the various surgical options available, you can make choices that align with your needs, preferences, and health goals.
  • Personalised Treatment: Not every weight loss surgery is suitable for every patient. Everyone has unique medical histories, lifestyles, and goals. Understanding your options allows us to recommend the most appropriate surgery tailored to your circumstances.
  • Risk Assessment: Each weight loss surgery has its risks and potential complications. We will assess and communicate these risks to you to ensure you fully comprehend the surgery and can make informed decisions about your health. We welcome all your questions.
  • Managing Patient Expectations: Patients who undergo weight loss surgery should have realistic expectations about the outcomes. By understanding the surgical options, we can help you set achievable goals and anticipate the average weight loss and health improvements you can expect.
  • Optimising Outcomes: The success of weight loss surgery goes beyond the operating room. Post-operative lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, and follow-up care are critical for long-term success.
  • Patient Education: Effective patient education is key to successful weight loss surgery. Your surgeon will explain the benefits, risks, and recovery expectations associated with each procedure in an easily understandable way.
  • Continuous Improvement: Our surgeons stay up-to-date with advancements in weight loss surgery techniques and technologies. Understanding the different surgical options allows us to adapt to new developments and provide the best possible care to you.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Weight loss surgery often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including collaboration between surgeons, general practitioners, dietitians, and mental health professionals. A shared understanding of the surgical options facilitates effective teamwork and patient-centred care.

Types of Weight Loss Surgeries

Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy)

A gastric sleeve procedure removes a significant portion of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube or "sleeve" shape. This reduces the stomach's capacity, limiting the amount of food a person can eat and decreasing appetite. There are, like most surgeries, important hormonal changes that drive weight loss.

Gastric sleeve surgery often results in significant weight loss and improvement in obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes. It also tends to have a positive impact on hunger and satiety hormones.

Gastric Bypass: Roux en Y

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass involves creating a small stomach pouch and rerouting the small intestine to connect directly to it, bypassing a portion of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. This restricts food intake and reduces calorie absorption.

Patients typically experience substantial weight loss and often see improvements in comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension. However, it may require more diligent dietary and nutritional monitoring due to changes in digestion.

Gastric Bypass: Single Anastomosis

This variation of gastric bypass combines sleeve gastrectomy and traditional gastric bypass elements. It involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting the small intestine with a single anastomosis, resulting in restriction and reduced calorie absorption.

Single anastomosis gastric bypass may provide effective weight loss with a less complex procedure. However, long-term effects on nutrition require careful monitoring.

Revision Surgery

Revision surgery is performed when a previous weight loss surgery needs correction, adjustment, or conversion due to complications or inadequate weight loss. The specific procedure depends on the patient's case and needs.

Revision surgery aims to address previous issues, improve weight loss, or manage complications from prior surgeries. Outcomes vary depending on the reason for revision and the chosen procedure.

SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy)

SADI-S combines elements of sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass. It involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting a portion of the small intestine to bypass the duodenum and part of the jejunum, reducing calorie absorption. It has much lower rates of some complications of gastric bypasses, such as ulcers and dumping syndrome.

SADI-S can result in significant weight loss and metabolic improvements. However, it's a complex procedure that requires vigilant nutritional management.

Gastric Band (Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding - LAGB)

More modern surgical options have replaced gastric banding. Our surgeons do not place gastric bands for our patients due to the poor long-term results and complications associated with these bands. However, we often remove gastric bands and offer conversion to other procedures.

Importance of Informed Consent

Informed consent is a critical aspect of the surgical process. It involves understanding and voluntarily agreeing to the procedure after receiving comprehensive information. This ensures that patients are aware of potential risks, complications, and alternatives to surgery. Informed consent empowers patients to make educated decisions about their health and treatment.

Guidance on Choosing the Right Surgical Option

To make an informed decision about weight loss surgery, consider the following:

  • Personal Goals and Preferences: Think about your weight loss, health improvement goals, and lifestyle and preferences. Each surgical option has unique advantages and potential drawbacks.
  • Discuss Concerns and Expectations: Have open and honest discussions with your healthcare provider about your concerns, expectations, and any questions you may have.
  • Evaluate Potential Risks and Benefits: Weigh each surgical option's potential risks and benefits based on your circumstances. Consider how these factors align with your goals and priorities.

Remember that choosing the right surgical option is a collaborative process between you and your bariatric surgeon. Being well-informed and actively participating in your healthcare decisions is essential to achieve the best possible outcomes.
