How Much Will I Lose?

How Much Will I Lose?

The amount of weight you can expect to lose after weight loss surgery can vary significantly from person to person.

Several factors influence the amount of weight you may lose, including the type of surgery you undergo, your pre-surgery weight, your commitment to post-surgery lifestyle changes, and individual factors. You must be focused on your own goals rather than other people's experiences.

HOW MUCH WILL YOU LOSE?

We aim to help patients lose between 65% and 85% of their excess weight (the number of extra kilograms you carry over a BMI of 25) by 12-18 months. It is not a rapid process. Some weight may be lost while on the Very Low-Calorie Diet(VLCD) before surgery.

The final goal weight you reach depends on several factors, including your

  • Genetics
  • Body composition
  • Sex
  • Age

Your expected weight loss also depends on how successfully after surgery you are in changing your:

  • Dietary behaviours
  • Lifestyle
  • Physical activity levels

Please note - up to 15% of patients are "non-responders" - that is, they may not reach the goal of at least 60% excess weight loss. Your surgeon will discuss the right option for you. If you do not reach your goal weight, don't be discouraged. Often, this has more to do with your physiology than with willpower or determination issues.

Weight Loss Timeline

The timeline for reaching your goal weight varies based on the type of obesity surgery:

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: Most patients reach their goal weight within 12 months.
  • Gastric Bypass: Most patients reach their goal weight within 18 months.

This typically translates to a gradual and healthy weight loss of approximately 0.5kg to 2kg per week, depending on your initial weight.

Rate of Weight Loss

Generally, the pace of weight loss is relatively consistent in the initial months after bypass and sleeve surgeries, with patients typically losing around 1-2kg per week. Most individuals achieve their goal weight within 9-12 months. There is considerable variation in weight loss trajectories between patients. Remember, you will be running your race.

Achieving a healthier weight is a journey, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Weight Loss After Surgery

Surgery is a valuable weight-loss tool, but it should be complemented by adopting a healthy diet and increased physical activity.

We view weight loss surgery as a facilitator for these changes. Your bariatric surgeon will provide detailed information about the procedure, but it's important to understand that it's not solely about the surgery. Our primary focus is to assist our patients in achieving significant weight loss, improving their overall health, and reclaiming their lives.

This entails the challenge of adopting healthier eating habits and incorporating regular exercise into your daily routine. While it may be difficult, the ultimate benefits outweigh the initial struggles.

Patients who have successfully undergone weight loss surgery typically experience:

  • Enhanced physical appearance,
  • Increased energy levels,
  • Often, the resolution of associated health conditions,
  • Improved quality of life.
